chapter one: shadows
Ordinarily, handing someone she had just met the keys to her Camaro wasn't a likely gesture for Isabela, but today was a good day to take exception. She imagined that perhaps it would get his mind off of his troubles, and by reducing his anxiety, perhaps help relieve the stress causing his ability to flare up beyond control. It was a theory at the very least, perhaps an educated one, but she wasn't sure. She was focused on getting Jeremy out of the city, away from people... that was the plan.
Of course, he could 'misfire' and zap her dead, but hadn't she just been attacked by another man just days before? Some insane preacher had made an attempt on the lives of two girls, but had escaped her. Her mind wasn't all in one place, needless to say. So she had instructed Jeremy on where to go, and was mainly quiet for the ride, letting the kid vent as much as he wanted, or simply enjoy the drive out. When they were out beyond the city limits, Isebela had asked Jeremy to stop briefly, and she made a quiet phone call to her office before getting back into the seat and having them leave the road.
Now, as the car pulled to a halt, she repeated the words that had triggered her mind's summary of everything up until now, "Right here's fine." She got out of the car and stretched her arms up over her head, rolling her shoulders in their joints as she looked off into the distance, to the mountains. "You remember that thing that's happening to you right?" she asked, not facing Jeremy just yet, "It's something you can do, it's a gift from the gods..." she explained, hinting at a bit of herself. "It's also a responsibility..." she added, "...and yeah, not all of them are like this, dangerous, but yours is, and that's why you need to control it."
She turned slowly back around to face Jeremy, her right hand slipping out of her pocket and extending a photograph. "You need to realize how important this is. There's no getting rid of it... you have to master it..."
The photograph displayed a chaotic and horrifying scene taking place in a dark room lit by the bright glow of arcing lightning. The people caught in the web were strained in wild, agonizing positions, with energy glowing through them...
