/// SPECIAL ABILITY
James has the ability to look into a person’s or objects past or immediate future by touching it (Temporal Observation), effectively allowing him to see all of the places and all of the actions performed by an object or person in the past, or in the immediate future (immediate future is about one month). He can also pinpoint the exact time and date in which an action occurred (Chronopathy) and can view all points in the timeline simultaneously as if they were photographs placed in front of him.
His ability can also be used to look into his own future (and past, in case he forgot something that needs to be remembered), which can somewhat give him precognitive abilities (but only if he remembers to look into the future first, which is trying [see the section below for explanation]).

/// ABILITY LIMITS
When using his ability, James essentially leaves his body in a trance-like state for a few seconds in order to sift through the amount of information (even longer if there is an exceptional amount of data to sift through, or if he is searching far into the past). Essentially, when using his power, James experiences a sort of out-of-body experience where his consciousness is transported to a location where the memories and past actions are presented to him as a sort of slide show of pictures and videos that he has to sift through, standing amongst them (think Minority Report for a visual of this experience, when T.C.’s character is using that computer to go through information). Because he is in a trance-like state, his body is essentially defenseless.
Though going through the past is relatively easy, it still takes a bit of a toll on his mind. Even short trips into the past of a person or object leave James with a small headache (most of which can be easily cured with an aspirin or two), while longer trips can produce ringing ears and migraines.
The real danger comes with looking into the future, however. Someone once told James that the future is written in sand, and to be able to pinpoint exactly what someone is going to do with that sand takes incredible energy and concentration. Even short trips into the future of a person or object can bring migraines and ringing ears, while pushing further into the sands of time can cause his ears and nose to bleed, splitting migraines that render him almost completely useless until they diminish and, in one extreme case, coma-like conditions.
The only time he can look into the future and not suffer any consequences are when he is looking forward up to two minutes from the present. Any further than that can bring about the damage listed above.

/// PERSONALITY
James is calm, analytical and sincere. Even in the most stressful of circumstances, James is able to keep his cool and can reason his way though it using his intelligence and intuition. He is friendly, and very much a family man, treating his friends and family with the utmost of respect. He is not to be crossed, however, because even though he doesn’t get too angry externally, his ability to connect information and figure out things going on behind the scenes can be a valuable tool in exacting revenge against those who transgress against him.
Though he is somewhat too trusting at times, if one loses that trust it can never be regained. It's not that he holds grudges, it's that he cannot respect someone that does not hold to promises or breaks his trust. This is because of his years as an agent in the CIA, where his job relied heavily on the trust of others.
Because James is incredibly observant, he has a tendency to surprise others with his knowledge of a subject when initially introduced to it. It can sometimes be a little offputting, and even make him seem arrogant and full of himself when he is just stating the facts. Regardless, people reacting to his as such does not really bother him; in fact, James finds people treating him with disdain because of his observances slightly humorous.

/// HISTORY
James was born and raised in the inner city of Boston, though he spent seven years of his childhood alone, his family was graced with another child when he was seven, making him the oldest of two. Though at first he and his sister, Mary, did not get along, as they grew older together they created a very close bond.
James graduated from an inner city school district at the top of his class, but that didn’t help him when he was drafted into the military in the summer of ’71 to fight America’s war in Vietnam. Placed into the Marines Forward Recon unit, it was there that James discovered his extraordinary gift. Able to touch downed Charlies and see where they have been, he immediately became an extraordinary asset to the military force and the United States government in general. His ability kept many soldiers safe and allowed for the military to learn Vietcong patrol routes, as well as camp locations.
Word of his abilities made its way up the totem pole, though at that point people just thought of him as an extraordinary tracker, able to pick up on the subtlest of hints in the landscape. One government agency saw his ability as a great boon, however: the CIA. In 1973, James was recruited into the CIA and began his tradecraft and field work soon afterwards.
In the CIA, James was a valuable asset in collecting Russian intelligence to aid the United States in the Cold War, often times risking his life in the line of duty. Having seen such locations as Siberia, Beirut, Afghanistan, China, and more in his assignments. All the while, James was refining his ability, stretching it even further than what he previously thought possible. Now able to see into the past and the future, he was able to gather the information designated by his assignment effortlessly, and have the foresight to dodge most of the trouble thrown his way.
However, James stumbled onto something horrific in his employment at the CIA: they were experimenting on those with special powers, trying to create some kind of superserum to administer to soldiers in case of a Soviet invasion, along with many other government secrets. Armed with this information, the CIA began hunting James to keep him silent, forcing him to escape the country to Ireland in 1976.
It was there he met a young woman named Nora Kavanah, who also had a special ability of her own, with whom he conceived a child, Cian, and married soon after. After a period of four years, James felt it was finally safe to return to the States. In 1980, the Emmerich family moved to New York City, where they lived until their next child, Alice, was born in 1984.
James preferred to stay as low as possible, limiting the use of his powers. However, as time went on he started to see little Cian developing abilities of his own, as well as Alice with her odd glowing. The family grew even larger with addition of Dei in 1990, after which James decided he’d had enough of children and had a little bit of an operation done.
After Cian’s departure for college at Cambridge for Theoretical Physics in 1994, James’ past finally caught up with him. A new branch of the CIA, full of people with special abilities of their own, came looking for him in the winter of 1996. With a final farewell to his wife and children, James was forced out of his family’s arms and into the life of a nomad, hoping from town to town to escape the long arm of the people looking for him.

James reclined in his chair, eyeing the man sitting across the desk from him.
“So, what is it that you want, exactly?”
The man shifted uneasily in his chair, sweat beading on his forehead. It seemed that James’ cold stare was getting the best of him. “I, uh, was told to give you this.” He held out a manila envelope with the bold letters reading “CLASSIFIED” stamped across its cover. The CIA never was one of subtleties, at least where paperwork was concerned. James took it, still eyeing the man with a half-amused smirk.
“You’re new to the Agency, aren’t you?” James wasn’t surprised when the man nodded. He laughed a bit, “So, what have they told you about me?”
The man had a horrified look on his face, then leaned forward a bit. “They say,” he said, half whispering as if he was saying something secret, “They say, down in the offices, that you, uhm…” he was struggling with the last part, James could tell. He adjusted his glasses and listened on. “They say you can see into the past, and the future.”
James shrugged, leaning forward to calmly cross his arms on his desk. “Well, what do you think?”
The man laughed nervously, “I… I don’t know, sir.”
James smiled, “Well, then. That’s nothing to really go on.” He stood, placing the manila envelope into a filing cabinet on the other side of the room. “What’s your name, son?”
“Dobson, sir.”
James shook his head, “I’m not in the military anymore, Dobson.” He turned, shrugging his shoulders at Dobson. “There’s no need to call me sir. And no, I don’t have superpowers.” He walked back to his desk, but did not sit. Instead, his fiddled with his pens, making sure they were in order as they were supposed to be. “No, I’m just very good with information. Observant and stuff like that, you know. Tradecraft.” He raised his eyebrows at Dobson, “They do still teach tradecraft, right?” Dobson nodded, and James smiled. “Well, good. Say, how about some coffee. You like coffee, Dobson?”
“Yes, sir… I mean, Mr. Emmerich.”
“Please, call me James.” He clapped his hand onto Dobson’s shoulder as the shaky newcomer stood from his chair. For a moment, his gaze went out of focus, and then back in. He smiled. “How about that coffee.” Together they walked out of his office, but James was a little bit more confident in his stride having the knowledge of everything this Dobson character has done in the past month.
