/// PERSONALITY
Charles usually comes across as overly blunt and socially awkward but with a laid back and friendly disposition that often allows others to overlook the abnormality of his remarks. He doesn't mean to be offensive, but his verbal filter cuts out quite often, meaning he tends to say what he thinks. Still, he manages to say even the oddest things with a nonchalance that belies the fact that he doesn't mean to offend. Charles is a little oblivious, living in his own little world where people never mean him harm, and he doesn't mean them harm in return. Still, he has a good sense of right and wrong, and will stick up for people who are being hurt, at least, if he's in a position to help.
His interactions with people generally stem from the fact that he has an outgoing personality as well as a very high tolerance to embarrassment. Getting up in front of large groups of people and making a fool of himself does not phase him at all, and just walking up to people and striking up a conversation is simply commonplace for him. He generally likes people, but knows when to back off if they really don't like him. Still, even if he gets a cold initial response, he'll push his luck a second time, and only back off if his second try is rebutted.
Charles's biggest motivating force is that he doesn't have much of one. He doesn't feel the need to strive for something bigger, because he likes life as it is, without too much expectation. This isn't to say that he won't work hard at something, but he likes to see if a project or job is worth working at before committing effort. As he generally sees it, most aren't. College was too much work for having the off chance of a house in the 'burbs, a good job is too much work for more money because it costs free time when he could be enjoying himself, and so on and so forth. However, his lack of motivation does not mean he is apathetic. He is very happy with life, and has a rich and varied lifestyle that just happens to be low maintenance and non dependent on an overly demanding job.
He generally enjoys the little things in life the most—the simple pleasures of beating a video game or playing with a pet or meeting some friends at the pub. Still, he does have a deep down wish to be involved in something larger. He tries to meet that need through interacting with a wide variety of people, connecting himself to humanity as a whole, but feels, deep down, that there isn't enough cool stuff that happens to people anymore.

/// APPEARANCE
Charles is a tall guy (6'2”) with a lanky but not muscular body. He's not well defined, but he's lithe, with a definite flexibility and easy way about him. His hair is very dark brown, and he keeps it short, but messy, not really doing anything with it. As such, it usually looks like he just woke up and has a bit of a case of bed head. His eyes are dark brown as well, and are slightly narrow, perhaps suggesting some Asian heritage somewhere in his past. Charles's skin is pale, and his face is softly angular and usually sports a bit of unshaven stubble.
His usual expression is one of blithe nonchalance, a little smile in the corners of his mouth, enjoying life, and not really paying attention to anything else. He doesn't really ever seem to get mad or annoyed, but rather gets more animatedly expressive when he is frustrated, otherwise moving in a very laid back manner. His movement is a little awkward, but with its own type of grace, mostly due to his height. He is reasonably athletic too, and is relatively light on his feet, walking with a jaunty step in his stride.
He wears decently nice clothes, usually button up shirts or polos and jeans or slacks, but his clothing is usually rumpled or slightly askew. His collars are usually slightly popped in places (or accidentally tucked into his overshirt, and his shirts are seldom completely tucked in. In general, Charles usually looks like a kid who was forced to look nice for a party and managed to completely undo how nice his mother made him look by the time he got there.

/// HISTORY
Charles was the third of four children born to Mary Beth and Theodore Mauer, a pair of high school teachers in the town of Telula, Arizona. His family owned a farm outside the town, and his youth was spent playing with his brothers and cousins in the woods and scrubland surrounding his home. They had forts in the woods, caught lizards, and terrorized his younger sister with their scaly pets. It was a good childhood, and his parents made sure that their kids were clothed, fed, and happy, although the family didn't have all that much money. The Mauer family was a pretty typical example of a good environment for children to be raised in, and the Theodore and Mary Beth Mauer were a communicative and happy couple.
When he started school, he got along well with the other children and generally did well, although he began to fall into the shadow of his older brothers. Mark and Nicholas were both extremely good at sports, and while Charles was also involved in soccer and baseball, he didn't have the zeal for it that his brothers did. He preferred to be outdoors, read, or play video games to sports, and stuck to hanging out with kids who had the same interests.
Since his brothers were both star, high school athletes, and he failed to even try out for any sports once he reached 9th grade, Charles fell into the fringes of high school society. He had friends, hanging out with the kids that really didn't fit into any of the cliques, and getting decent grades. Basically, high school was a non event for Charles, as he graduated squarely in the middle of everything with very little distinction and few relationships that have lasted over the years.
He attended the University of Phoenix in the fall after he graduated, changing majors several times over the three years he stayed there, and eventually dropping out due to lack of motivation. College was fun for him, and he didn't do poorly, but it just felt silly to him to do so much work to just have to fight it out for the few jobs available to people in the fields he wanted to be in. His college career did lead to a few life altering realizations though. Firstly, he realized that he would be perfectly happy just having fun and simply living life. Secondly, he realized after a couple incidents at parties (and once with a roommate) that he was equally attracted to guys and girls.
After he dropped out, he got a small apartment in Phoenix and got a job at a small bookstore called The Pequod (named after Captain Ahab's ship in Moby Dick), and has worked there ever since. About two years ago, when he first got his Job at The Pequod, he found a book on Harry Houdini, the great escape artist. As a young man with a lot of free time, he started reading books on escape artistry, finding out the tricks of the trade. Practicing his escape artistry, wandering around Phoenix and talking to people, and playing video games are how he spends most of his free time these days. Occasionally, one of his friend will call him up and they'll go to a party or a pub, but for the most part, it's a simple existence.
This is where information about him realizing he had a power would go if he actually had a power. As is, this is a pretty useless use of spoiler tags.
Unfortunately, recently he got fired from The Pequod for an incident that he'll tell you was a "difference of opinion involving a customer who wouldn't admit that Star Wars Episode I was crap," and his old manager will tell you involved Charles making a little kid cry. He quickly got another job at a detective agency in Phoenix called the Sharp Agency. While it hasn't exactly panned out on the excitement front, it's given him some time to desk jockey, organize files, and perfect his solitaire game.
/// ANYTHING ELSE?
His parents got him an African Grey Parrot on his ninth birthday, and the bird has accompanied him through out his life. Currently, it's cage sits in the corner of his apartment, and Charles tends to talk to it like it is a person. Toaster talks back, as over the years, Charles has taught it quite a large range of words and phrases.

/// SAMPLE RP
Charles had just finished a day at work and fumbled to get his key into the lock of his door. He'd stopped on the way home to get a few new games at the used movie store down the block, and had picked up a few groceries on the way home too, and was currently balancing three bags while trying to unlock his front door.
With a satisfying click, the latch slid open, and with a push he was inside. Only then did it occur to him that he could have put the bags on the ground while trying to open the door, and he rolled his eyes inwardly at his lapse of common sense.
”Toaster, I'm home,” he called out to the apartment, setting the groceries on the table and walking the video games over to the couch. He set them down, and walked over to a large cage next to the sliding glass door to his porch.
”Hey, buddy, miss me?” he asked, opening the cage door and sticking his arm in.
The large, African Grey Parrot inside stepped onto his arm, nuzzling his wrist with its beak. ”The princess is in another castle,” the bird squawked happily, climbing Charles's arm and pecking lightly at the side of his face.
”Tell me about it, buddy,” Charles muttered, walking into the kitchen and opening up the fridge. ”Now what do you want for dinner.”
