Personality:
Dorsey is a very strong-willed individual, who fancies himself somewhat sagely. Although he may come off as condecending at times, he aims to teach and lead others by what he believes is a better way. In a world threatened by potential madness as humans begin to develop abilities on a widespread scale, he aims to keep the sanity by getting his message out; a message of self-control, dicipline, and utmost responsibility. He believes that the gifts of evolution should not be abused. As a man who seldom uses his own ability for fear of those around him, he stands also as a perfect example of what it means to live the life of a special in a responsible and diciplined way.
Dorsey believes in peaceful resolutions, and will try to reason with nearly anyone, until it becomes glaringly obvious that they are beyond reason. Ultimately, he is driven by a vision for the betterment of humanity, and believes at the core that it is the moral imperative of the human race to master and use these abilities responsibly. It is upon this very principle that the Archivists have been founded.
To a more personal level, Dorsey is a highly intelligent and sophisticated man, with admittedly indulgent tastes. Fine wine and dining, luxuries in the home, his money belongs to him, and he doesn't mind spending it. Fortunately, he's also a very generous man, and takes both pride and joy in sharing his luxuries with others, being the reason he has opened his own home, the Drayman Estate, to other Archivists, friends and allies, or even just people who have developed an ability and are in need of guidance, friendship, or help in learning to control their gifts.
Very sociable and personable, Dorsey enjoys social events and gatherings, and takes his own pleasure in being surrounded by the people he has opened his doors to.
Appearance:
Dorsey is a very tall man with an upright, stately posture. His dark brown eyes are deep with intelligence and alertness, always taking in every detail around him from behind subtle, but clearly expensive glasses. His scalp is dusted with a very short layer of salt-and-pepper'ed hair, and the wear on his face in his age portray a man who loves to smile, and has spent many years finding reasons to do so.
He carries himself with a regal dignity, and has no compunctions about spending good amounts of money on quality clothing. He prefers sharp suits, mostly dark, but occasionally will brighten the room with a white suit instead. In addition to his glasses, the expensive shoes and rolex watches that he wears make it clear to anyone under a rock enough not to know who Dorsey Drayman that he is clearly a man of refined tastes, and wealth.
Powers/Abilities:
Heliokinesis / Heliosynthesis
Simply put, Dorsey holds in his hands the very power of the sun. Few have ever seen him demonstrate his ability, but should he ever truly call upon it, he could create miniature stars that radiate with extreme heat and solar energy. Unprotected, virtually anyone affected by this exposure for any protracted length of time is at great risk as the human race has grown and evolved on the otherside of Earth's protected barrier. Dorsey can also release searing rays of extreme solar heat that pose an unquestionably lethal threat, but in creating small, star-like globes of solar energy, he can do even more, such as creating devastating mini-novas.
All of the effects a human being would suffer if close to the sun and unprotected are threats posed by such a powerful ability.
There is also a passive side to Dorsey's ability. His body literally feeds upon sunlight. Exposure to sunlight of even a passive degree will fill his reserves of energy quickly. Due to this, his body does not require food (although he does require lots of water), and he does not need to eat. Typically, Dorsey will eat several times a week for enjoyment or social reasons.
Power Limits:
When actually using his ability, Dorsey must maintain a tremendous amount of self-control and focus in order to prevent becoming the cause of a great deal of friendly fire, so to speak. His ability is very difficult to contain, and cannot be used on pin-point targets easily. The safest way he could strike out against a single target is by the use of a ray, but this still exposes everyone present to the intense solar heat and energy for even a brief time that could still pose hazardous.
Rays travel in a laser-like path that will sear anything in their path. The penetrating and heating power of his rays is dependant upon how much of his energy he pours into the effort, and the same is true for how hot or how large his mini-novas can become.
Lastly, if Dorsey is put through an extreme amount of pain or otherwise loses control over his body, losing focus on keeping his ability contained, he can essentially become a devastating human bomb. For this reason, he is especially cautious about where he plays the king on his chess board, so to speak. It's not a matter of cowardice, but a matter of concern for the innocent people surrounding him.
The heat and radiation of his rays, miniature stars, etc. do not seem to harm him in any way. His body appears to be completely immune to any ill effects from solar exposure. Even if Dorsey's body radiates a bodily nova, he will survive unharmed, providing that whatever forced him to lose control does not kill him instead.
Calling upon solar energy will deplete his energy reserves quickly due to the awesome amount of power that is released. This means that although he is highly dangerous and powerful, he has little staying power for a protracted battle unless he truly rations his energy. Overexerting his reserves of energy can be dangerous to his health and even lead to ill effects from fatigue, lethargy, unconsciousness, or even coma, depending on just how far he pushes himself.
Although natural sunlight is ideal, he may also be partially sustained by light bulbs designed to produce sunlight for reptiles or other pets.
Lastly, it should be noted that when exposed to sunlight, Dorsey's metabolism, stamina, immune system, and healing rate are all greatly improved by the stimulation. His physical strength and speed are also somewhat increased, but only to a point that would be considered comparable to exemplary athletes. These attributes will not reach 'superhuman' proportions.
Likewise, if kept out of sunlight for sixteen hours or longer, Dorsey's energy will begin to bleed away gradually, and by the time he has been away from the sun for over twenty-four hours, he'll experience considerable fatigue, disorientation, and general lethargy. If kept out of the sun for a full 48 hours, Dorsey's body will begin to 'brumate' similarly to the way that reptiles do when overly exposed to cold or facing the winter. Afterward, if continuously kept away from the sun's rays, Dorsey's body will begin to break down, and by the third day, he'll likely be long dead.
Brief Character History:
Little is known about the childhood of Dorsey Drayman. What is known is that he was born to wealthy parents and always had whatever he wanted as a child. He was an unruly youth, spoiled by his parents, but eventually matured a great deal. The manifestation of his ability had a great deal to do with this. When he was 23 years old, his father passed away, and his mother soon followed when Dorsey was 26. Although he misses his parents, he doesn’t show a great deal of sadness when he remembers them, seeming somewhat detached.
When he was 26 years old, he began to involve himself in charity work. For several years, he opened up a half-way house to help people who were recovering from substance abuse. He also maintained a steady pattern throughout over a decade of running fundraisers and drives for food and clothing for the homeless, not only in Phoenix, but in other cities. Although only roughly half of the money his parents left him remains, it’s still plenty enough that he can use it to help people for the rest of his days. At the age of 36, Dorsey became involved with a group known as The Archivists, and within several years, was entrusted to a council seat. Shortly afterward, he opened the doors of his own estate to be used as the group’s headquarters, and a general safe haven for people with special abilities who need protection or guidance.
He remains one of the head spokesman of the group, and handles most of the group's funding these days. With his assistance, The Archivists as a non-profit have greatly flourished with his help. Some consider him the unofficial leader of the group.
